★★★☆☆
(Reviewed December 11, 2018) I don’t know why I never wrote a review. My thoughts can be boiled down basically to: 1) this was about 100 pages longer than it needed to be, 2) boy would I have been mad for this book if I actually gave a damn or knew anything about classical mythology.
It was definitely an epic, definitely very drawn out, not a tight story with a singular plot line or a clear problem/solution. The one major bookend is the cousin/monster situation (name of which I forget) but when we returned to that I had kind of stopped caring about her. Circe is pretty cool I guess. I enjoyed that Odysseus was a douchebag. I do not care about his sons. Not enough Penelope.
★★★★★ This might be the best book I’ve read all year, and certainly the best and smoothest reading experience I’ve had in MONTHS. Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is an adventure fantasy/myth retelling set in Mexico in the 1920s Jazz Age.
