★★★☆☆

Very enjoyable and funny read. Solid character development for ditzy protagonist Lucy and great cast of characters. Gets a little rape-culture-y with the nonconsensual kissing and girl falling in love with boy anyway. Contextual character stuff holds up though and makes the romance decently believable.

I reckon most of the joy I derive from reading social commentary English classics like this is because understanding it and empathizing with the humor of ye olden folk makes me feel smart. If I unpack that it’s probably like internalized xenophobia/assimilationism/white Anglo-Saxon supremacy, etc. Gonna go read a shit ton of Asian authors for the Asian Readathon now. Also can now watch the movie with Helena Bonham Carter and Maggie Smith. :)
